The internal walkway network on a condominium or apartment site: unit approaches, garbage and recycling routes, mail kiosks, visitor parking connections, amenity paths and the garage stair. Under Residential Tenancies Act Regulation 517/06 a landlord must keep common areas free of unsafe snow and ice, and a lease clause pushing that onto tenants is void.

A person injured on private property has 60 days to serve written notice, so you will usually hear about the incident long after anyone could recall that morning. Ottawa is genuinely different from Toronto and much of Ontario on this point. The City clears public sidewalks here: residential sidewalks on a 5 cm trigger with a 12 to 16 hour window after the snow stops, and downtown sidewalks plus the winter cycling network at 2.5 cm within up to four hours. You are not required to shovel the public sidewalk in front of your house. What that also means is that a 12 to 16 hour window can leave the walk unusable through an entire morning, and a claim over a public sidewalk is a hard road: written notice has to reach the city clerk within 10 days, and the City is generally not liable absent gross negligence. A fall on your own walkway is a different matter entirely, sitting under the Occupiers’ Liability Act with a 60-day notice rule.

A parking lot is asphalt with vehicles on it. A walkway is usually concrete, often newer, and frequently sits right beside a doorway that people track product through. Bulk rock salt spread at lot rates onto a concrete walk is how you get surface scaling, spalling along the edges, damage to interior flooring and a complaint from every tenant with a dog. On walkways we use finer product at lower application rates, calcium chloride blends where pavement temperature has dropped past the point sodium chloride is doing anything useful, and grit on steps and ramps where somebody needs footing right away. Application rate is as much of the decision as product choice. More salt on a walk does not mean more melting, it means more residue on the floor inside and concrete you will be replacing sooner than you planned.
